Barabra Prinčič

On 2018 Earth Day, the Department of Creative Design of National Yunlin University of Science and Technology echoes on the trend of “Circular Design”. We specially invited Professor Sarah Prinčič, a lecturer from Slovenia, Mr. Chen-hsu Liu, a designer in the industry, and Li-kai Zhong the founder of OUI Forest Design, for series of workshops to share their practical circular design creation and cases, so as to facilitate students to innovatively explore materials, and create future opportunities for sustainable products in the market.

“Future design thinking" is the main core of the workshops. The three lecturers encourage students to integrate their cross-disciplinary capabilities to explore different ideas about life culture and experience, in hope that students can create more depth in their designs. Through guidance and experience, the students can discover valuable design thinking process, providing them different journey in learning. With the topic, “Did you cycle today?”, Professor Barabra Prinčič and Chen-hsu Liu guided all seniors who participated in the workshop to think about the circular design. With their formerly prepared materials, the students contemplated on the symbolic code and emotional value representation in the circular design which was reflected in the lectures and interactive discussions with teachers. Environmental issues and creative activities were incorporated, in an attempt to reverse student’s concept of waste, and to enable students to easily understand the notion of “waste as resource,” so as to provoke ideas for circular design.

The workshops was then continued by designer Li-kai Zhong with the theme of “Beauty in Balance”, guiding students to think about how to use wood remnants produced in the production process, in thinking outside the box. Though understanding the life course of wooden products, such as material selection, design structure, processing, to the restructuring of final product, the students then give these remnants new life, in hope to continue its cycle, and open up a whole new dialogue in design.

In addition to constantly interpreting future imaginations in sustainable life, this series of sustainable design workshops also brings together experts and scholars internationally, so that participating students can foresee the new direction of the design industry and make the most impact for their learning.
