Teachers of the Department went to The State University of Surabaya (UNESA) for intercultural visits and to give speeches at the “Research and International Design Forum: Taiwan and Indonesia Aboriginal and Traditional Co-creation Design”. On April 2, 2019, at 8 o’clock in the morning, the teachers arrived at their first stop—The State University of Surabaya, which is regarded as the cultural melting pot in the region. Nearly 300 students participated in the speech and exhibited their works that day. Professors Shyh-Huei, Huang, Hsiu-Ching Hsieh, and Li-Hsun Peng of our department shared their experiences on rural revitalization design and university social responsibility, teaching experiences for the empowerment of country’s aboriginal culture design, and the integration of social practice in university design education. Through sharing experiences of design and culture by not only slides but also relating with Indonesia’s culture, the speeches were highly acknowledged by participating members of the forum. Thus, students of UNESA asked plenty of questions after the speech and have shown interests in the graduate school programs at YUNTECH. The teachers then introduced related information for enrollment, application time and scholarships.
Five teachers of UNESA with different specialization also shared their experiences in the design optimization of traditional snacks, reproduction upgrade of products, headscarf and batik design, traditional costume design and cultural product packaging design. Especially when we’re introduced with traditional costumes, they were presented through full makeup live show. Through this sharing, we understand issues regarding Indonesia's cultural preservation and inheritance, and the similar issues that Taiwan also need to resolve, such as how to integrate innovative and new elements in traditional culture, how to make the new generation identify with the traditional culture, and how to preserve and pass on our traditional culture.
